Before choosing hair removal methods, it’s important to understand the different kinds of body hair. Hair consists of keratin, the same strong protein found in nails.
Human body hair falls mainly into two groups: vellus hair and terminal hair.
Vellus Hair
Vellus hair is soft, fine, and short. Most of the hair covering our bodies is this type. For example, many women have vellus hair on the chest, back, and face.
You might notice vellus hair looks darker or more visible on those with darker skin tones. This hair helps regulate body temperature by providing insulation.
Terminal Hair
Terminal hair is thicker, darker, and longer than vellus hair. It’s found on the scalp, shaping our hairstyle.
During puberty, terminal hair begins to appear in areas like the armpits and pubic region. Boys may also see terminal hair grow on the face, chest, legs, and back. Terminal hair serves to cushion and protect the skin.
Hirsutism
Although hair growth is normal, some may experience excessive hair, known as hirsutism. Various medical issues can cause this.
In girls, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hormonal imbalances can lead to dark, coarse hair on the upper lip, chin, chest, belly, and back. Certain medications, such as anabolic steroids, might also contribute.
